I was assigned in one of the farthest Mission Schools in the Langilan Cluster, in Bukidnon, Philippines. It was my dream to become a SULADS missionary not because my girlfriend was a SULADS missionary before, but it challenged me that ladies became missionaries and men just stayed at home. So, when the right time came I applied and here I am a real missionary to the Manobos, one of the native tribes in Mindanao. My culture, although I am a full blooded Filipino, is quite different from the culture of the natives. I was told that if you extend your help to the natives and something happened to the natives either he died or was hospitalized you must pay something or you die also.
One day my partner and I were cleaning our vegetable garden when we noticed a boy lying on one of the benches of our native classrooms. When he saw us he immediately came out limping on his right foot. We discovered that his right foot was enflamed and needed an antibiotic or something to reduce the inflammation. We had the desire to help him but we had no medicines to share and it flickered to our mind their culture and what would happen to us if the foot would show more complication and the boy should develop a fever. I suggested to my partner that we could help the boy in different way. We would tell him what to do and we would just monitor his condition daily. So, we instructed the boy that he must follow it strictly and religiously. We told him, “Look for guava leaves and boil them and use the leaves and the water for cleansing the wound morning and evening. After cleaning the wound put some clean banana blossom on it and tie it with abaca hemp. You do it with a prayer so that God will work miracles in your life. After three days come back to us. Keep it secretly by yourself.” He left and promised to do it secretly. After a week my partner and I were visiting homes as we did after our afternoon classes. It happened that we passed by the basketball court and many of our pupils were playing. Surprisingly we saw the boy playing with no more inflammation on his right foot. He told us he followed our instructions and prayed to God for healing. What a faith we saw in that boy! It taught us a lesson to be more dependent on the Lord for our lives. © SULADS International, Inc.
